Uber Eats Final Arrangement.jpg

"Dinner's Ready!" Artist Statement

Inspired by Andy Warhol’s experimentation with duplication and materialism in his 1962 piece, “Campbell’s Soup Cans,” this painting seeks to re-invoke messages about the disjointing presence of consumerism in the modern era. UberEats now plays a similar role as that which Campbell’s did in the 1960s, turning mealtime—which is inherently meant to be shared and savored—into a convenient commodity. Rather than learn recipes, cook meals, and eat together as a family, we turn to the convenience of Uber Eats to order different meals at different times. UberEats becomes a metaphor for a greater universal trend of separation and isolation in our increasingly commodified society. To further emphasize this, I utilized AI in the brainstorming process to generate the designs for the coolers, intentionally stripping the work of some of its connection to humanity. More so, painstaking hours were devoted to eliminate signs of brushstrokes (the paintings almost look like prints), such that the lack of painterly mark mirrors a lack of human expression and emotion. Even the overall look of the coolers is not unlike that of a luxurious handbag, speaking to themes of materialism. And, because the elements in each canvas do not overlap or connect, there is a sense of compartmentalization—separate components and non-convergent lines simultaneously existing yet not co-existing.
